  For this week, I'd like to review Anna Chandler's portfolio. She's a multimedia artist, designer, and animator whose work is wonderful and expressive. She enjoys incorporating traditional mediums into her design and animations. Anna Chandler's Portfolio Her work is all on the home page and you can scroll through it. There is no buffer or padding between different projects so sometimes you can't tell if you're looking at a different project or if it's a continuation from one project. There's no text, no description, or title to each of her projects. It's overwhelming and you're trying to figure out what to look at. I know which projects are different since I follow her work but observing from a third-party viewer who might not be familiar with her work I could see how it could be a bit hard to navigate through her portfolio.  Staying Motivated In one of our videos for week 5, on AIGA Portfolio Making with Dan Mall he mentions practicing design everyday. He also brings up Kobe Bryant's work ethic and how he became successful by practicing everyday. I don't know anything about basketball, but I was curious to read up more on Kobe's work ethic and I was really impressed. He knew from the age of 13 that he wanted to be the best basketball player out there and he started waking up at 5 am, practicing for 2 hours before school and then practicing for 2 more hours after school everyday. He focused on different foundational skills, one by one over few months at a time. That's crazy discipline for a 13 year old.  I've been pretty unmotivated these days and I've known for a long time you can't wait to be inspired or motivated, that you have to build a habit of practicing to master whatever it is that you want to do.  More Motion Graphics I've just been constantly looking at more motion graphics work for my capstone for inspiration and research, to see what makes an effective title sequence or motion design.  This student project of The Grand Budapest Hotel is a strong example of different animation principles at play. Each transition is intentional with elements acting as a catalyst for the next scene. I cannot stop watching the part where the keys swinging reveal Wes Anderson’s name. It’s not just one swing, but two. One to reveal his first and then another to reveal his last name which makes the motion more complex. There’s also follow through/secondary action as the key ring is swinging, the tags also follow. Then when the key drags the name away! So good! There is also examples of squash and stretch as the ice cream scoops fall on top of each other at the end.  Visual Research I've been gathering visual research for my capstone project, which I'm planning to animate a title sequence. I'm a bit nervous on how I will execute the project or if its even possible to do all that I want to do. I went digging for inspiration this week and it was fun. It reminded me how much I loved going into blackholes of finding animations on Youtube. I often forget what used to bring me joy. The design for this animation is abstract, using simple shapes but it's so impactful the way the shapes distort and change color. This makes me think of ways of how I can make my title sequence be nonrepresentational.  This title sequence is gorgeous, mostly animating type and simple shapes. The same motion of dominos falling down is applied to the type and shapes and repeats throughout the animation. I love how the text just breaks and falls apart. The pacing of the animation also creates suspense. I'm doing a terrible job in explaining how just riveting ...

 Nature I've been cooped up inside my room, stressed over work and school, and keep forgetting to go outside and take walks. Being outside in nature is what boosts my mood and it's one of my biggest inspirations. Somebody in our class talked about seeing patterns and design in nature which resonated with me. I went to Half Moon Bay over the summer break and I saw these patterns on rocks that really intrigued me. Questions run through my mind, like did the waves make these patterns? Could water be that powerful? or what else made these impressions on these rocks? I live near Golden Gate Park and these are pictures of plants and flowers that I took at Botanical Garden and around my neighborhood. Its so fun to see all the combinations of colors and patterns. I'm also planning to do studies with watercolors and color pencils of these plants when I have the time.  

· Lorenzo Mattotti · I found Lorenzo Mattotti on Pinterest one day and I was instantly drawn to his work and he has definitely become one of my favorite artists.  He's a comic book artist and illustrator based in Italy and his work has been published in Cosmopolitan, Vogue, The New Yorker, and Le Monde. He initially started studying architecture in university but he ultimately stopped to pursue his passion in illustration.  The way he builds up and layers color with color pencils and oil pastels is breathtaking. He's a master in shape theory, color, and lighting. His composition and the way he poses figures have so much drama. He's the biggest reason I started experimenting in color pencil in hopes to adopt his art style. I want to purchase the comic books he's illustrated for, even if they're in Italian or French, because I love his work so much.
